چکیده

The fourth Daphnia Genomics Consortium Meeting was held from July 7th through July 9th, 2007 at Indiana University (Bloomington, IN, USA). This year’s meeting was entitled The Genome Biology of the Model Crustacean Daphnia and was highlighted by the initial public release of the draft version of the Daphnia pulex genome. In collaboration with the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (JGI; CA, USA), the Daphnia Genomics Consortium (DGC) successfully sequenced the D. pulex genome, representing the first crustacean genome to be analyzed. Daphnia are freshwater crustaceans found in most lakes and ponds throughout the globe, and have been ecologically investigated since the 1600s. They are arguably one of the best understood organisms. Daphnia are internationally recognized as an indicator of environmental health and, consequently, as a bioassay of aquatic toxicity, to define regulatory limits and to monitor effluents released into fresh water. Daphnia are primary grazers of algae and primary forage for fish; as such, they are considered keystone species in aquatic ecosystems. The DGC is an international network of investigators committed to establishing Daphnia as a premiere model system, surpassing traditional model systems in investigations of environmental interactions, by incorporating Daphnia’s wellestablished ecological knowledge base. In a community-wide effort, the DGC is: • Coordinating efforts towards developing the Daphnia genomic toolbox, which will then be available for use by the general community;

The water flea Daphnia - a 'new' model system for ecology and evolution?

Daphnia pulex is the first crustacean to have its genome sequenced. Availability of the genome sequence will have implications for research in aquatic ecology and evolution in particular, as addressed by a series of papers published recently in BMC Evolutionary Biology and BMC Genomics.

Genomics in the ecological arena.

This meeting report presents the cutting-edge research that is developing around the waterflea Daphnia, an emerging model system in environmental genomics. Daphnia has been a model species in ecology, toxicology and evolution for many years and is supported by a large community of ecologists, evolutionary biologists and ecotoxicologists. Thanks to new advances in genomics and transciptomics and...

TALEN-mediated knock-in via non-homologous end joining in the crustacean Daphnia magna

Transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) are versatile tools that enable the insertion of DNA into different organisms. Here, we confirmed TALEN-mediated knock-in via non-homologous end joining in the crustacean Daphnia magna, a model organism for ecological and toxicological genomics. We tested two different TALENs, ey1 TALEN and ey2 TALEN, both of which target the eyeless locu...

From genes to behavior: investigations of neurochemical signaling come of age for the model crustacean Daphnia pulex.

The cladoceran crustacean Daphnia pulex has served as a standard organism for aquatic toxicity testing for decades. The model organism status of D. pulex rests largely on its remarkable ability to rapidly adapt morphologically, physiologically and behaviorally to a wide range of environmental challenges, as well as on its parthenogenetic reproduction and ease of laboratory culture. As in all mu...

Daphnia as an Emerging Model for Toxicological Genomics

Daphnia are already an established model species in toxicology. This freshwater crustacean is used commonly for environmental monitoring of pollutants around the globe and plays an important role in establishing regulatory criteria by government agencies (e.g., US EPA, Environment Canada organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Environment Agency of Japan). Consequently, daphniids...
